MahaNakhon and CCTV: Among The Most Influential Tall Buildings of the Last 50 Years

The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat released its list of the 50 most influential skyscrapers for the last 50 years. With this illustrious selection, CTBUH is highlighting “best practice examples of tall buildings that represented a significant change in thinking or technique.”

MahaNakhon, completed at the end of 2018, joins a range of game-changing tall buildings completed in the last 50 years. In the words of CTBUH: “It integrates with the city through its organic form, by dissolving the mass as it moves between sky and ground. The dematerialization exercise returns a sense of the human scale to what would otherwise be an imposing structure. It is not short on theatrics, however—a glass-floored observation deck awaits visitors’ ascent to the summit.”

CTBUH already recognized the building with an Award of Excellence earlier in 2019.

In addition to MahaNakhon, Ole Scheeren is furthermore represented with CCTV Headquarters in Beijing, which is also among the top 50 list. As CTBUH put it: “CCTV paved the way for future skyscrapers that would question the very idea of the tall building as a singular monolith.”
